Modern Addition to Spanish Hills Home

Remodel and addition to create zones family living and a home office, with sweeping views

Modern meets tradition with beauty and style, as the modern addition updates the traditional adobe home in this remodeling project at the first home built in the Spanish HIlls development.

The soaring glass breezeway joins the old and new parts of the home. The roof is galvanized metal, designed to weather, as is the ghostwood siding. The primary living spaces and master suite are in the original adobe-style structure, with workspaces and office area placed on opposite sides of a breezeway whose strength belies its light and airy design. Built to withstand the Chinook winds, the glass structure is fortified by stout steel columns and beams. Outside the breezeway, a large covered patio is perfect for lounging on sunny days and a gas fire pit for evening gathering.

The soffit details from the exterior continue into the interior, intentionally blurring the lines between outside and in — including the tile floor. The entry door was designed with a lower exterior roof. Stepping inside, the ceiling lifts, showcasing an amazing view of the Front Range.

The inside of the home is filled with smart and starkly beautiful custom finishes, using the same type of honest, raw materials seen on the exterior of the home. There are clear-coated steel columns throughout, left unadorned, along with wood, stone, and concrete.

The custom doors were inspired by the audiophile homeowners’ speakers — mimicking the black showing the wood grain and complemented by the cherry wood. They were crafted on-site.

All of the the rooms were designed to showcase the views of the Flatirons, Indian Peaks of the Continental Divide, and beyond. The homeowners wanted to create privacy while making the most of the panoramic views. There’s also a secure yard for dogs — providing protection from the local coyotes.
